Planning to present your documents abroad?

You will likely need an apostille or superlegalisation - Embassy attestation, depending on the country where your documents will be submitted.

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a type of higher authentication recognised by countries that are signatories to the Hague Apostille Convention .
It certifies the authenticity of the stamp and signature of the official who issued the document, and confirms that the official was authorised to do so.

When is superlegalisation - Embassy attestation required?

If you're submitting documents to a country not part of the Hague Convention, you’ll need a different type of legalisation known as superlegalisation (or consular legalisation).

What’s the difference between an apostille and superlegalisation (Embassy attestation)?

Apostille

An apostille is a simpler and faster method of legalising documents. It is accepted in all countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention — for example: the EU countries, the United Kingdom, the United States, Turkey, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.

You can find the full list of member countries here .

Superlegalisation - Embassy attestation

Superlegalisation (also known as consular legalisation) is a more complex and time-consuming process. It always concludes with the embassy or consulate of the country where the documents will be used.

Some of the countries that require superlegalisation include Vietnam, Taiwan, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and others.
The process depends on the type of document and the authority that issued it.

The prices are per document and are final.

The price for an apostille on documents issued in the United Kingdom, the USA, and Canada is available upon request.
The price depends on the type of document and the issuing authority.

Processing Time for Apostille

The processing time for an apostille is typically 1 to 3 working days. If the document was issued by a registry office outside of Prague and the Central Bohemian Region, the process may take up to 2 additional weeks. This is because such documents must first be verified by the regional authority in the city where the registry document was issued, before apostille can be applied.

Express apostille services may be available, depending on the type of document.

FAQ - Questions and Answers about Apostille

Is an apostille required for documents presented within the EU?

According to Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 July 2016 on promoting the free movement of citizens by simplifying the requirements for presenting certain public documents in the European Union (the "Public Documents Regulation"), an apostille is not required for documents within the EU.

This applies to documents such as birth certificates, name changes, death certificates, marriage certificates, certificates of legal capacity to marry, divorce, separation or annulment of marriage, registered partnerships (including capacity and status), dissolution, separation or annulment of registered partnerships, residence certificates, nationality, and certificates of no criminal record.

However, this regulation does not fully abolish the higher verification by apostille, and in practice some authorities within the EU may still require an apostille. Therefore, we recommend verifying this requirement with the specific authority receiving the documents.

Any diplomas, school certificates, and documents certified by a notary (powers of attorney, notarised signatures, notarised copies, extracts from public registries issued by a notary, etc.) still require apostille within the EU and may be requested by authorities.

How long is an apostille valid?

An apostille itself does not have an expiry date. However, some documents bearing an apostille have their own validity periods – for example, certificates of legal capacity to marry or criminal record extracts.

Can I send you documents electronically?

Unfortunately, in the Czech Republic, it is not possible to obtain an electronic apostille or apostille a document printed from an electronic file. The document must always be original. The exception is when an electronic document contains a recognised electronic signature. In such cases, we can arrange to convert the document into a physical copy through a notary and then obtain the apostille.

Do you require a power of attorney to arrange an apostille?

No. We can arrange the apostille on your documents without needing a power of attorney from the owner.

Can someone else collect the apostilled documents?

Yes. Simply provide us with the name of the person collecting the documents, and we will hand them over to that individual.

How do I pay for the apostille?

If you deliver the documents to us in person, you can pay cash or by card at our office. If you send documents by post, we will issue an invoice upon receipt, which can be paid by bank transfer.

Is the same apostille valid in multiple countries?

Yes. An apostille does not specify a particular destination country and is therefore valid in all countries that accept apostilles – i.e., the signatories of the Hague Apostille Convention.

Can I cancel an apostille order?

Yes. If we have not yet certified, apostilled, or forwarded your documents for certified translation, you may cancel the order at any time and receive a refund. The same applies if, for any reason, the apostille cannot be obtained – you will receive a full refund.
